How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

Sow thickly in rows about 1 cm deep from early spring; no need to thin much. Sow a fresh patch every 2–3 weeks for a constant supply.

Scallions (green/bunching onions) are harvested young before bulbing, so they're quick and easy. You can even regrow store-bought ones by replanting the rooted white base.

How to Harvest

  • 1Pull whole scallions once they're pencil-thick, or snip the green tops and let them regrow a couple of times.
  • 2Loosen the soil first so they slide out cleanly.

Step 5

Saving Seeds

How to Save Seeds

Let a few plants overwinter and flower into round seed heads, then collect the black seed once dry.
