How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

Root a leafy tip cutting in water or moist soil with warmth — reliable, and pinching the parent makes it branch.

A handsome, upright indoor tree (a relative of the fig) with big, glossy, leathery leaves, often deep burgundy. It's much easier than its cousin the fiddle-leaf fig — more tolerant of light levels and the odd missed watering, though it still likes consistency. Easy to propagate from cuttings, and you can keep it bushy by pinching the top. The milky sap is an irritant and it's toxic to pets.

Growing Tips

  • 1Give it bright, indirect light for the best colour (it tolerates medium light but the dark-red types fade in shade), and water when the top few cm dry — yellow, dropping leaves usually mean overwatering.
  • 2Wipe the glossy leaves to keep them dust-free and breathing.
  • 3Pinch out the growing tip if you want it to branch rather than shoot straight up.
