How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

Cut a 10–15cm piece with 2–3 leaves just below a node, sit it in water, and watch roots appear in a week or two — then pot it up. Foolproof.

The ultimate beginner houseplant: a trailing vine that tolerates low light, irregular watering, and general neglect, yet still grows fast. Each leaf has a little bump (a node) on the stem behind it — cut just below one and it'll root in water within a week or two. Trails from a shelf or climbs a moss pole. Note: it's toxic to cats and dogs if chewed.

Growing Tips

  • 1Pothos is hard to kill: bright, indirect light gives the best growth and variegation (it survives low light but grows slower and greener), and water only when the top few cm of soil dry out — soggy soil is the one real danger.
  • 2Wipe the leaves occasionally, feed lightly in the growing season, and trim long vines to keep it bushy (and propagate the trimmings).
