A peace lily grows as a clump of small plants, so the way to make more is to split it. In spring, slide the plant out of its pot and gently pull or cut the clump into pieces, each with a few leaves and its own roots. Pot each piece in fresh potting mix at the same depth, water well and keep it out of direct sun for a couple of weeks while it settles.
Peace lily is one of the easiest houseplants, and it tells you when it is thirsty: the whole plant droops, then perks up within hours of a drink. It does not grow from leaf or stem cuttings, so dividing is the only home method.

Growing Tips
- 1Give your peace lily bright light without direct sun, such as near an east window, because it lives in low light but flowers much more in brighter light.
- 2Use a light potting mix with a little compost, in a pot with drainage holes.
- 3Water when the top 2 to 3 cm of mix is dry, before the plant droops, as wilting often stresses it.
- 4Feed with compost tea or a sprinkle of worm castings once a month in spring and summer.
- 5Brown leaf tips usually mean dry air or tap water minerals, so use rain or filtered water and group it with other plants, and wipe dusty leaves with a damp cloth.
- 6Every part of the plant can burn the mouth and upset the stomach, so keep it away from pets and small children.

How to Harvest
- 1There is nothing to eat on a peace lily, so its yearly care is a little tidying.
- 2Cut each flower stalk off at its base once the white hood turns green or brown.
- 3Pull off yellow or brown leaves at the base, which keeps the plant looking fresh.
- 4Move it to a pot one size bigger every year or two in spring, once roots circle the bottom or poke out of the holes.
