How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

Surface-sow indoors 10 weeks before last frost (the seed needs light), keep warm and moist, then harden off and transplant after frost, 25 cm apart. Don't bury the crown.

Celeriac is the knobbly swollen-stem cousin of celery, grown for its nutty root. It's slow (about 110 days) and needs rich, constantly moist soil — the main reasons it's rated moderate rather than easy.

Growing Tips

  • 1Celeriac's two demands are a long season and never drying out — rich soil, constant moisture, and mulch.
  • 2Removing some outer leaves and side-roots through summer helps the bulb swell.

When to Pick

Lift in autumn once the bulbs are tennis-ball-sized or larger

How to Harvest

  • 1Lift the swollen bases in autumn once they're at least tennis-ball size — they tolerate light frost.
  • 2Trim the roots and tops; they store for months in a cool, humid place.

Step 5

Saving Seeds

How to Save Seeds

Biennial — overwinter a root, let it flower and seed the next year, and collect the tiny seed from the umbels.
