How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

Sow 6–8 weeks before last frost (germination is slow, 2–3 weeks) for the earliest, longest cutting season.

Statice (sea lavender) produces clusters of papery, brightly coloured flowers on winged stems that dry superbly and last for years — a backbone of dried arrangements alongside strawflower. It's tough as nails: drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant (it's a coastal plant), and happy in poor, sandy, free-draining soil and full sun. Easy to grow, long-blooming, and beloved by bees and butterflies while it's fresh.

Planting & Sprouting

Growing Tips

  • 1Full sun and sharp drainage are essential — statice thrives in lean, sandy, even salty soil and rots in heavy, wet ground, so don't pamper it.
  • 2It's an ideal seaside and dry-garden plant.
  • 3The key skill is harvesting at the right moment for drying (fully coloured), then hanging the stems to dry.
  • 4Long, strong stems and lasting colour make it a cut-flower-grower's staple.

Step 4

Harvesting

When to Pick

Blooms midsummer onwards; excellent fresh and one of the best for drying

How to Harvest

  • 1Cut stems for drying when most of the tiny papery flowers on a cluster are open and fully coloured (unlike strawflower, statice is cut when nearly fully open, since the colour comes from the lasting papery part).
  • 2Strip the leaves and hang the bundles upside down somewhere warm, dark and airy.
  • 3For the garden, keep cutting or deadheading to extend the long bloom season.
