How to Start It

★ Recommended for beginners

Sow 4–6 weeks before last frost with warmth for an early start; soaking the fuzzy seed first speeds germination.

Globe amaranth produces round, clover-like, papery flower clusters in bright jewel tones non-stop through the hottest, most humid summers — and they dry beautifully, so it's both a tough bedding plant and a fine everlasting cut flower. It's wonderfully heat- and drought-tolerant, loves full sun and poor soil, and is largely ignored by pests. Butterflies adore the fresh flowers. Easy, long-blooming, and reliable where heat defeats other annuals.

Growing Tips

  • 1Heat, sun, and sharp drainage are exactly what gomphrena wants — it's a brilliant, no-fuss choice for sun-baked beds and pots in hot, humid climates where fussier flowers fail.
  • 2Don't overwater or overfeed.
  • 3Pinch young plants once for bushiness, and cut freely for fresh and dried arrangements.
  • 4The sturdy 'everlasting' blooms hold their colour for years when dried.

Step 4

Harvesting

When to Pick

Blooms all summer through heat; great fresh and dries to last for years

How to Harvest

  • 1Almost carefree: it's self-cleaning, so no deadheading is required, though cutting stems for fresh or dried bouquets only encourages more.
  • 2For drying, cut when the round blooms are firm and fully coloured, then hang them upside down in a warm, airy spot.
  • 3Water only in real drought and don't bother feeding much — lean, hot, dry conditions suit it perfectly.
